In his Consolation to Helvia, Seneca the Younger asked: “Is it not madness and the wildest lunacy to desire so much when you can hold so little?” This Stoic idea suggests that true wealth lies not in possessions but in mindset.
William B. Irvine, in A Guide to the Good Life, expands on this by noting that rejecting luxury frees up time and energy for more meaningful pursuits. While Stoics don’t chase wealth, they may still acquire it, often as a byproduct of their service to others.
