It’s hard to find a more striking modern example of someone who embraced the practical side of philosophy than the French philosopher and political activist Simone Weil.
Never content to theorize about injustice from a distance, she threw herself into difficult situations to gain first-hand experience of the conditions she wanted to help improve.
This attitude led her to assist in trade union movements, go to the front line of the Spanish Civil War, and spend more than a year working as a laborer in car factories.
