Good morning.

Albert Ellis was an American psychologist and psychotherapist who developed what he called “rational therapy.” This later became known as rational emotive behavior therapy (REBT). REBT is seen as the first form of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), which remains popular and effective today.

Ellis credited his key ideas to Stoicism. Many of the principles incorporated in REBT, he said, were not new: some of them were originally stated several thousand years ago by the Greek and Roman Stoics.
