Good morning.
In Plato’s Phaedo, we hear how the philosopher Socrates, sentenced to death and awaiting execution in prison, decides to spend some of his time composing hymns.
Explaining why he would continue with such a normal and creative activity knowing he was about to die, Socrates said he was responding to a dream that often came to him telling him to make music.
Although he had always interpreted the dream as an encouragement to go on practicing philosophy—”the greatest kind of music”—he now thought it would be wise to use his free time to compose a few verses, in case the dream referred to music in the popular sense of the word.
