Good morning.
The misconception that Stoicism seeks to completely eradicate all emotion is a frustratingly common one.
Not only is it a misrepresentation of the philosophy that so many people have worked so hard to preserve for so long, but it also leads people who accept the notion down a dangerous path toward suppressing feelings that should be felt.
It’s an unrealistic, not to mention undesirable, mental state to try to attain.
As Donald Robertson writes in The Philosophy of CBT, the confusion is partly caused by the difficulty of translating the Stoic word for “passion”:
